The purpose of the Exemplary Writing Program is threefold:

1. to identify and give public recognition to outstanding writing programs in public schools across the state of South Carolina
2. to make available a framework of essential criteria for an effective writing program that serves as a basis for self-assessment and planning in schools and
3. to facilitate sharing and best practice among schools based on a common understanding of criteria related to success in teaching students to be effective writers.
